Gemklip started out as the brainchild of Teqzo consulting, a company with the legacy of providing innovation and desiging products for companies in India and abroad. We aimed to carry on that legacy, with the vision to empower people to inspire by design. Gemklip served as a platform for designers and creative thinkers alike, to turn their ideas into fully finished products. People all around the world can now gain an impact and benefit from your solution.
Gemklip Goes Online
Our team of designers came up with a line up of simple and innovative products, including the Jumbo Gemklip, Jarry, and Crypto (to name an few). But the job wouldnt be complete until we found a place to sell these products. Opening a store isn’t an overnight job, and we’ll admit we were a bit hesitant to open an actual store just yet. So we resorted to a quicker plan and opened shop – online.
We started stocking up on products so that online orders would go smoothly, and kept the extras in our own studio. We figured instead of untidily stacking boxes in a corner of our studio, we could use the spare space to create an in-house store. So now there was an online and an offline store. Our plan was in motion. This situation, however, didn’t end too well. Word of mouth resulted in a few online sales, but there were barely any store visits throughout the whole year. We even sold our products at creative events (quite successfully) but the sales were periodic/highly seasonal. From the bigger picture, we weren’t yielding as much as expected. We had reached the point where we were actually going to close down the shop. Gemklip just wasn’t contributing much to the company’s success.
The Perfect Deal
That was when we had an unexpected stroke of luck. Our consulting company, TEQZO, was in the middle of a massive project. We had to ship products abroad and our studio wasn’t big enough to stock supplies. So, the search began, for the perfect warehouse. We were making making phone calls, sending e-mails and skipping from one site to another, but in vain. That’s when we got an offer that didn’t seem too golden for us at first glance, but within one visit we concluded that the place was simply ideal. We had to walk only a few blocks from our studio and it also had a shop-front. We did the math, and if we gave up the extra studio space and rented this place instead, the costs would cancel out. It was perfect, and we embraced the opportunity.
Time to Transform !
Once the shop was all cleaned up (not as easy as you think), it was time to customize !
We came to the conclusion that since we were designers, we could design the shop’s interiors ourselves. Our team got to work and in less than a month, we’d given the store a complete make-over.
We designed minimalistic shelves (laser cut and powder coated) to display products and a personal workspace for the employees that managed the store.
Our team then accessorised the store in a way that our creativity would show on the outside- literally! We got colourful, waterproof vinyl stickers and let them trail from the pavement into the store, finally spreading out to showcase our amazing array of products. The store was given personality, with a wink sticker that was pasted on the front doors.
Our team also designed a picture corner, which was a huge hit amongst customers. (SPOILER: The optical illusion’s full effect can be seen only upon a visit to the store).
We cleared up the second room, and it would be used as a space to conduct D-hive workshops . New brochures for the workshops were also designed and kept for display. We fixed a custom-designed sign board that would light up at night to let everyone know we were in business. We designed a constellation-inspired mindmap showing our community of creative thinkers. All these improvements made sure that the quirky, clever style attributed to Gemklip showed through.
But there was still something missing. The handful of products designed by Gemklip were not enough to populate the entire store. We approached design firms (in India and abroad) who shared similar ideas and sold products that were simple and different. We acquired products from PELEG DESIGN, Monkey Business, Mininch and Supervek. Many of these products are available for the first time ever in India.
Monkey business was founded in 1994 and collaborates with the leading product designers of Israel to bring you a collection of truly innovative gifts and tools.
We’ve got tools from Minich that have such a strong aesthetic appeal, that one wouldn’t even call it a tool. Mininch designers have great credentials with complimentary expertise in design, marketing, manufacturing, & project management; also won a number of awards including 2013 iF product design award & 2012 Red Dot design concept award.
Supervek brings to you a diverse range of wallets that scream “Style-statement”. Supervek brings out alternative ideas and products to life that not only complement today’s lifestyle but over time also define them.
All Sorted Out.
Our graphic designers provided each product with a unique piece of visual merchandising. It took a while to figure out shift timings and managers for the store, but a few discussions took care of that. Our social media pages were updated, and you can keep a lookout for exciting events and announcements on our Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook pages.
Everything was finally sorted out and the Gemklip design store was now up and running. The customers so far have all left with a smile (and atleast one Jumbo gemklip). The store proved to increase Gemklip’s popularity not only locally but across the globe, and our employees were benefitting from it too. We are already scheduling meetings as to how to go about mass communication, new and upcoming products and much more.
So if you ever happen to be in Kamanahalli, make sure you give our Gemklip Design Store a visit.
